Speciation [spee-see-ay-shon]--- The process by which new species evolve from old ones. It's a process that happens over millions of years by natural selection. Lets say a species is separated by a major barrier (water, mountains, sheer distance). They are separated into two populations that can no longer interbreed. Over the years, their gene pools become more and more different due to random genetic mutations. Also, the environmental pressures on the two populations are different, so different traits are advantageous to them. Over millions of years, new species evolve from the old one by natural selection. Ex. Darwin's Finches. The finches of the Galapagos islands. A flock of finches was blown out to see by a large storm, they happened to land on the Galapagos islands. What makes the Galapagos islands unique is that each island has a different environment. The food sources on each island were different. As you can see, the finches' beaks adapted to the different food sources. A new species is officially created when the two populations no longer recognize each other as the same species, and they are no longer willing to interbreed. So, just looking at the human population, it's obvious we began to speciate. You have to be blind not to see it... See? However, we weren't separated long enough to completely diverge into different species. Obviously, we still interbreed. However, we were separated long enough for there to be major differences in our appearances and in our cultures. Although there is still racism, I'm amazed by humankind's progress. Normally, when this sort of thing happens in nature, one population will kill the other one in order to protect their niche. We still have not completely come to terms with our differences, but we're well on our way. Every decade, we see more and more interracial couples. We are beginning to antispeciate the world. DO YOUR PART IN ANTISPECIATING THE HUMAN RACE! GET OUT THERE AND INTERBREED! PS. Over the million years or so, do you think humankind will mesh into one megarace? Do you think that's good or bad? (Please note: If that we did become a megarace, the human population would have less genetic variation. So one epidemic of a serious disease could kill us all, because no one would be immune.) just because we look different doesn't mean speciation is occuring....
