I am 19 year old female. I have never had a pap smear, but have gone with my mom and she has explained what it consists of. Right now, I have a huge anxiety problem which I am trying to control with medication. My mom had ovarian and uterine cancer, so my doctor is sending me to a OB/GYN to get a pap smear. I can't do it. I don't trust doctors at all and this isn't something you can bring a friend to for support. I had a situation where I was raped and molested as a child, and if I go, I think I will have a panic attack. I am already having great distress. But I have to go to make sure my likelihood of me getting ovarian and uterine cancer and to make sure I don't get it. I don't know what to do. I am really upset. I don't think I can handle that situation. What should I do?
Please don't say, "Just go and get it over with!", you guys really don't understand what a problem this is. If you ever had a panic attack, I think you would understand more. Post edited at 4:24 pm on Aug. 6, 2008 by Anonymous

Almost. But...if you're worried they're not gonna do their job right...if it's a guy doing the pap, it's illegal to not have a woman nurse in the room, to make sure they're not doing anything wrong
I just don't like doctors.

I understand that. But think of it this way: If you don't get it checked, and you DO have something...you would never know and it could get worse. And when I had mine done because I became sexually active...it only lasted like 2 minutes...

I'm sorry, that's rough.  You'll have to get it done eventually, try asking your close friends. Having someone you trust with you will definitely help. Even if it seems like an awkward thing to request, friends will understand.

That's another good point, pap smears are incredibly quick procedures.
